Red Hook Recreation Area
The Red Hook Pool is an absolutely massive (like, football field-sized) Olympic-sized pool located across the street from the Red Hook Ballfields. I first visited this pool about ten years ago, and have remained impressed by how clean the facilities are and how—even when it’s really crowded with summer vacation-crazy teenagers—laid back and pleasant the atmosphere is. This pool definitely attracts a lot of families with young kids because it has a large wading pool area, but it’s still possible to enjoy your time there even if you hate the sight/sound of little children. Unfortunately, because this pool is in Red Hook, there isn’t any great public transportation option, but there are lots of bike racks nearby and nothing feels better than rewarding yourself after a long, sweaty bike ride with a dip in a pool. An added bonus to this neighborhood is that there’s plenty of great food around. On the weekends, the Ballfields host the food trucks that Red Hook has become famous for, and during the week, you’re not too far away from all the great restaurants and bars on Van Brunt Street. Go to this pool! You won’t regret it.
