Sunset Park Pool
This pool is one of the eleven WPA pools that opened in 1936 under the direction of Robert Moses (proving, I guess, that even Moses wasn’t pure evil) and has beautiful Art Deco facilities with a diamond-motif as part of the brick architecture. But enough about architecture, what about the pool? It’s a beauty. Olympic-sized and ice-cold (at least, it has been each time I’ve been there) this pool is a haven for city swimmers. And while there are usually a lot of families there, Sunset Park doesn’t have a wading pool, which means less really little kids, which means less chance of an errant turd floating past you in the ultra-chlorinated water. There’s ample seating pool-side, and lots of public transportation options, so it’s pretty easy to get to. Plus, you’re in Sunset Park, so after you work up your appetite swimming, you can eat at Tacos Matamoros or grab an avocado shake and báhn mi at Ba Xuyên and watch the sun set over New York Harbor. That’s a perfect summer day, right there.
