The Best Tattoo Shops in Brooklyn for Tattoo First-Timers
Flyrite Tattoo
Flyrite isn’t a new recommendation from folks here at Brooklyn Mag HQ, as the long-running shop has popped up on our pages before, but everything I’ve read and heard about it in recent months leads me to believe it’s still one of the best in the borough. To start, artists are open to walk-in consultations to talk through ideas, collaborate, and answer any questions, which, as an indecisive wuss, immediately eases the prospect of forever in my mind. (One Yelp reviewer recalls her artist dissuading her from going with all-white ink, promising that it wouldn’t end up looking like what she had in mind. I appreciate that. This is stuff you need to know.) This, of course, wouldn’t matter much if they didn’t know what they were talking about or were only focused on making the sale, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a negative comment about any of Flyrite’s artists, and trust me, I’ve looked. Though Mike Lucena has been the go-to among your BK Mag pals—his reputation for script is first-rate and look at the shading on this skeleton’s pants!—no one on the five-person team is short of rave reviews. Also, they’re apparently the type of people who take an annual staff trip to Six Flags, which is the type of people you probably want drawing on you body in permanent ink.
