The 10 Most Classic Brooklyn Novels
Daniel Fuchs, The Brooklyn Novels
This Jewish writer from Williamsburg, who ended up writing a few notable screenplays in the 50s (Panic in the Streets) and dying much later in Los Angeles, is best remembered for a trio of early novels from the 30s: Summer in Williamsburg, Homage to Blenholt and Low Company. Sometimes these are called “The Williamsburg Novels,” but the last book is set in Brighton Beach. Chronicling the character of immigrant Brooklyn slum life, they are now published all together, 800-something pages, with an introduction by Jonathan Lethem.
