The 10 Most Classic Brooklyn Novels
Hubert Selby, Jr., Last Exit to Brooklyn
Selby is hitherto Bay Ridge’s greatest contribution to literature, and this manic stream-of-consciousness novel, mostly set around the waterfront on the Bay Ridge/Sunset Park border, is his most classic work: a six-part novel populated by the underclasses, heavy on booze, drugs and all manner of sexuality: prostitutes, trannies, and queers. Selby used to hang out with his pals at the all-night diner on Fourth and Bay Ridge avenues, which is still an all-night diner.
