The 10 Most Classic Brooklyn Novels
LJ Davis, A Meaningful Life
Davis’s novel quickly followed Fox’s, and for years they were, like, the only major writers living in Brooklyn. Also a novel about gentrification, the book is mostly set in Manhattan, until its wonderfully named protagonist Lowell Lake decides to try and find purpose in his existence by buying and fixing up a large house in Clinton Hill. It’s both hilarious and heartbreaking, the best Brooklyn novel on this or any list.
