Gimme Shelter: The Homes of 8 Brooklyn Professionals
Longtime Cobble Hill residents and owners of beloved boutique Article& (long-called Dear Fieldbinder before a revamp last year), Lara Fieldbinder and Brent Steen live in a top-floor, sun-drenched apartment that features clean-lined furniture; abundant artwork not only by Steen but also by the couple’s friends; and a perfect pile of rocks, which the couple’s daughter collected;resting in the corner of a windowsill. “She gets them near the Gowanus Canal,” Steen says, laughing. “So they could be contaminated!” Despite the warning, it’s impossible not to want to get up close and study not just the rocks, but all of the lovely decorating touches (many of them eBay finds) that grace the apartment. The couple run every aspect of their business themselves—from inventory to styling the boutique to photographing the clothes for their website—and so they appreciate the fact that their home can be something of an escape. “We’re kind of minimal,” Fieldbinder says. “We need quiet when we get home. At the store, we’re hit with so many things, and it’s kind of intense. So when we come home we just like the quiet.”
