Brooklyn’s Sustainable Design Boom: 10 Eco-Friendly Designers To Know Right Now

Another major booster for Brooklyn’s design community, Mandel helped spearhead a “Sustainable Design Soiree” at Brooklyn Fire Proof back in November, and says, “I cannot emphasis how important it is to network and just talk to people about your ideas. So many of the great factories or fabric supplies I have found are from word of mouth. Brooklyn is such a great community of makers, that chances are you know someone who can help you.”
Her line, which launched last summer, tends to take on a theme for each collection and gives a portion of sales to a related non-profit; her most recent line is inspired by oil spill patterns in the Gowanus, and raises money for the Gowanus Canal Conservancy, for instance. All her production is New York based, and Mandel says, “I had worked for five years in the fashion industry and felt that if I was going to do something on my own it should have a positive impact.”
