And Now, Your Halloweekend Scary Movie Round Up
Hardware (1990)
Directed by Richard Stanley
Now that the incredible Lost Soul: The Doomed Story of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau floats in the Netflix-sphere, viewing Hardware today is a bittersweet experience. It’s difficult not to see the mysterious, wandering junker in the psychedelic red desert, collecting and repurposing machinery, as Stanley himself. Then a young bloke unafraid to project the entrancing witchery of horror and heavy metal onto dystopian science fiction, Stanley envisions a sandblasted future brought down by basement-dwelling voyeurs and nightmarish artificial intelligence (but disc-jockeyed by Iggy Pop, so there’s that). Moses (Dylan McDermott), or “Hard Mo,” to his familiars, surprises his crafty girlfriend Jill (Stacey Travis) with a robot that, whoops, wants to commit old-fashioned genocide. And you think your beau can’t buy you the right gift around the holidays. Max Kyburz (October 30, midnight at the Nitehawk)
