BRENNAN & GRIFFIN: WORM TURNS ATMOSPHERE — HEATHER GUERTIN
Worm Turns Atmosphere is Heather Guertin’s second solo show with Brennan & Griffin, but her first in their new Lower East Side location (Mary Weatherford marked their first show in Red Hook, in a former metal castings warehouse). Guertin’s egg-y paintings are large, luscious, and mesmerizing: the paintings morph, as the title suggests, from human face to uneasy ellipse.

KENTLER INTERNATIONAL DRAWING SPACE: LANGUAGE LANDSCAPE — GOLNAR ADILI
Golnar Adili was born in Iran. Shortly after the Islamic Republic of Iran gained control in 1979, her father (a prominent intellectual) was forced to leave, and Adili and her father were only reunited permanently several years later when she attended college in the United States. He died of cancer shortly after their reunion, leaving several years’ worth of letters—those letters are the foundation of Adili’s show, a collection of elegant drawings, the best of which are on light, loose Japanese tissue paper.

INTERSTATE PROJECTS: DO YOU LIKE ME — SAM COOKE
“What does a skinned rabbit look like?” queries Interstate Gallery. “To be more specific, what does the skinned CGI animated rabbit from the 2016 film Zootopia look like?” Cooke, born in Paris and starting his MFA at Colombia this fall, makes videos with a disturbing sense of violence and vulnerability: this show, Do You Like Me, promises more of the same.

DENNY GALLERY: STILLS FROM “THE END OF SUMMER” — JESSIE EDELMAN
Babes in trunks and bikinis, long gazes, and luxurious Mediterranean vistas: Fort Greene-based artist Jessie Edelman’s sweetly expansive paintings in Stills from “The End of Summer” at Denny Gallery are the ideal way to ignore hurricane season. If Vogue says you should go (and they do), you should definitely go. Plus I say you should go. So go.
